Route description
The village of Lana is not far from Meran. It is the starting point for our hike into the Ultental Valley. On the Gampenstraße road, we take the turn-off onto the old Völlaner Weg trail and follow it to the Runggöglhof farm, where a path marked no. 6 branches off to the right. This is where the challenging part of the trail begins. Over steep paths to the hamlet of Rateis, continuing through chestnut groves and mixed forests up into the Ultental valley. We pass the Höllentalhof farm and the Schlossegghof farm. The latter is located opposite the gnarled ruins of Eschenlohe Castle dating back to the 12th century. The last section provides an adrenaline rush: to the right of the Schlossegghof, we descend along dizzyingly steep paths into the bed of the Falschauer stream to finally reach St. Pankraz via the meadows on the opposite slope.
From St. Pankraz there are regular buses to Lana.
