Gilfenklamm gorge in Ratschings

Coming from the east, there is a yellow sign with the inscription “Gilfenklamm, Cascata” already in Gasteig/Ratschings pointing to the right to the district of Stange (3 km). You should better park your car right after the bridge. Following the signs through the houses and along Jaufenbach river, you will reach the access to the gorge. A small entrance fee will be charged.

Then, a wonderful trail goes through the forest for about 20 minutes, until you cross the river on two wooden bridges. Here, you can already hear the rushing water and it will not take very long until you stand above the foaming water masses. Gilfenklamm gorge has been accessible for about 100 years already and offers breath-taking views into the depth of the torrent. As well, there is a wonderful viewpoint on a rock, at the gorge’s exit there is Gasthof Restaurant Jaufensteg.

In order to proceed with the circular tour, you go further to the valley and turn left after 100 m on a meadow trail (sign of Reifenegg ruin, no. 11B). Next to the houses, you walk on an asphalted road until Burkt with the highest point of the hike (1,235 m). 300 m after the trails goes left to Reifenegg ruin and leads to it on a steep passage. A small path starting at a bench leads to the castle’s remaining tower.

For getting back to the valley, there is a wonderful serpentine trail (no. 1A) crossing small streams and leading along a stone wall until you exit the forest at the access point of the gorge.
