Holidays in Toblach
“Typical for South Tyrol” will a few travellers think looking at the village in the middle of wide meadows and surrounded by high Dolomites rocks. In Toblach, rural traditions meet Italian shopping culture, accompanied by the symphonies of Gustav Mahler and mountain choirs.
The area around Toblach in Hochpustertal was already known to the ancient Romans and experienced a massif upswing during the Monarchy of Austria-Hungary.
The magnificent Grand Hotel Toblach reminds of this first period of prosperity, being a cultural and conference centre today, accommodating the annual Gustav Mahler Weeks as well as the Tyrol Festival. In fact, Austrian composer Gustav Mahler spent his holidays here several times, composing some of his most popular works in Toblach. The small composer’s house can be visited.
The centre of the village is St. Johann parish church, an important evidence of late Baroque, surrounded by many wonderful shops and boutiques. Families will look forward to the natural bathing pond in Toblach with adjacent recreational area and to the wildlife zoo with many different animals.
Summer at the foot of the Three Peaks
Mountaineers and nature lovers will appreciate the “municipality of the Three Peaks”. Toblach is located between the Nature Parks Fanes-Sennes-Prags and Three Peaks, offering as well the popular Lake Prags and many other natural beauties.
From Toblach, you can get to the Italian Dolomites and Cortina d’Ampezzo via the narrow and about 15 km long Höhlensteintal Valley. Right in this valley, there is the turquoise blue Lake Toblach, for a welcome refreshment in summer and wonderful walks in winter, as well as the picturesque Lake Dürrensee.
Mountain bikers and cyclists as well will feel like in paradise in the environs of Toblach. Pustertal cycle path goes via Bruneck to Eisacktal on one hand, and to the Austrian city of Lienz on the other hand. As is goes slightly downhill on both sides and as the way back can be done by train, the cycle path is particularly popular with families. Another option is the cycle path between Toblach and Cortina.
