The Royal & Imperial Bad Egart Museum

For nostalgics, those who are interested in history and of course for Sisi fans – a visit of the Royal & Imperial Bad Egart Museum in Töll, a hamlet of Partschins. What was a therapeutic bath in former times, is an inn with a wonderful museum displaying numerous exhibits about the Habsburg Monarchy.

Karl Platino, better known under the name Uncle Taa, was given a present with a picture of Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary when he was 15 years old. Since then he has evolved his passion for the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, also known as royal and imperial Dual Monarchy. In fact, he founded the Royal & Imperial Museum.

A famous empress in Partschins

Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary (1837-1898) is particularly fascinating for Karl Platino. Sisi, the Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary had visited Partschins and Bad Egart when she stayed in Meran. Bad Egart is the oldest therapeutic bath in Tyrol. It was mentioned in documents for the first time in 1430, but it is also possible that the Romans had benefited from the curative powers of the three water sources. At the beginning of the 20th century, Bad Egart was experiencing his golden period with the construction of the new railway line. In 1956, the bath was abandoned.

A very special museum

In the Royal & Imperial Museum, you can see many exhibits dating back to the Habsburg Monarchy, such as personal items of Emperor Franz Joseph and of his wife Elisabeth as well as many curiosities. When you are walking through the museum, you can discover a variety of exhibits which are mainly dating back to years between 1867 and 1918. Particularly worth-seeing is the Biedermeier kitchen, a small shop as well as dolls and porcelain. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, guided tours are available on request. Also, a source is integrated into the museum.

The outdoor area of the museum is accessible for visitors for free and offers a chapel, for instance. In the cosy inn, you can enjoy culinary delicacies. Another detail about Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary: By her family she was called Sisi, not Sissi. However, a well-known film trilogy with Romy Schneider is Empress Elisabeth is called Sissi, which is why this name is frequently used.
