Museum Mansio Sebatum

If you stroll through St. Lorenzen and environs, you time and again get past ancient ruins and other excavations, showing the long history of the hamlet and still keeping some secrets.

The area of St. Lorenzen has been settled already during the Iron Age and over the course of time it developed into a quite important Roman road station that bore the name Mansio Sebatum.

For those, who would like to learn more about this time, the tribe of the Saevates, the history of settlement in the valley Pustertal and the Romans in St. Lorenzen, in addition to the existing antiquarian exhibition in the community centre there is a new meeting point: the Museum Mansio Sebatum, housed in the former town hall on the town square.

Three floors full of history

On three floors visitors are send on a trip to the past, as the small market town in the centre of the valley Pustertal turned into a rest station of the Romans. Many about 2,000 years old finds, which came to light in and around St. Lorenzen, and multimedia and interactive stations illustrate the history in a special way.

On the 1st floor visitors learn all about the Iron Age, the Celtic kingdom Noricum, the tribe of the Saevates and the Romans’ road building. The exhibition on the 2nd floor revolves round life and work in Mansio Sebatum. On the 3rd floor there were presented Roman gods, rites of passage and popular belief.

In addition an archaeological theme path offers the possibility to continue the tracking in the fresh air and to visit the excavation sites around the village and in the area of Sonnenburg Castle.
