archeoParc in Villanders
Villanders is in the Eisacktal, is a very popular holiday destination, especially for lovers of ancient history, archaeological excavations and past. Since 2009, there is in Villanders, an archaeological park accidentally discovered in 1976, after excavation for the installation of some pipes.
The area of Villanders was a densely populated area and visited during different phases of prehistory, in Roman and in medieval times, thanks to its convenient location and mild climate, it was for centuries the land of encounter and exchange between the Nordic and the Mediterranean culture.
The archaeological site covers an area of 1600 sq. m, here had be found three main buildings and the remains of a fourth.
The excavations were carried out by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage of Bozen. The decision of the archaeologists involved, was to cover all excavations to repair everything from the weather that could damage them.
Also around Villanders you can find areas of archaeological excavations in Feldthurns, for example, was discovered a place of worship with megalithic tombs dating from the Bronze Age. The archaeologists have found graves and the remains of a kiln for ceramics, due to the first communities of farmers and herders who lived here in the early Stone Age.
