Bozen Municipal Museum
The Municipal Museum in Bozen was built in 1905, on the initiative of the museum association of Bozen on the foundation walls of the Medieval Hurlach property. The museum is run by a board of trustees, that is formed by the museum association and the city administration of Bozen.
The centrepiece of the Municipal Museum is for sure the tower offering an extraordinary view of the historical centre of Bozen. After the tower was demolished during Italian fascism, it was rebuilt at the beginning of the 1990s.
The museum was closed from 2003 to 2011. Today the tower and a part of the collections is again accessible for visitors.
Extensive collections
The rich collection of the museum includes not only such traditional sectors as archaeology, art from the Middle Ages onward, and folklore, but also old items such as those from the Society for Christian Art, the Museum Society, and the Bozen National High School as well as newer objects obtained through purchases by the city of Bozen or through private donations.
Periodically, the Municipal Museums also offer special exhibitions and mediation initiatives.
Museum library
The Municipal Museum in Bozen also accommodates a library with more than 30,000 books and historical, art-historical and archaeological journals. These majorly date back to the 19th and 20th century and can be consulted for research and study purposes.
