MMM Ortles in Sulden
The famous alpinist Reinhold Messner has realised an impressive museum project in different locations in South Tyrol – the Messner Mountain Museum: Each Messner Mountain Museum is dedicated to a specific topic. The MMM Ortles in Sulden is located at 1900 m above sea level and displays the facets of ice and the fascinating beauty of glaciers.
From the outside, visitors can only see the entrance area and a jagged lightwell through which they can see the top of Mt. Ortles in one place. The major part of MMM Ortles in Sulden was designed below grade by architect Arnold Gapp in the style of a glacier crevasse. This way, he has created a perfect combination of museum topic, architecture and landscape.
Glacial ice & polar ice
The MMM Ortles tells the story of snow men and snow lions, of the white out and the force of avalanches. In addition to the world’s biggest collection of pictures portraying Mt. Ortler, the highest mountain in South Tyrol, the museum offers different artworks focussing on ice. As well, visitors can learn more about ice climbing and polar expeditions.
Curiosities in the Mini-Museum
In the close surroundings of the museum entrance, has renovated a 400 years old farm. Here, the guests of Yak & Yeti inn can taste South Tyrolean dishes and yak meat specialities.
The MMH Curiosa in the so-called “Flohhäuschen” house – a former hut for alpinists – is a freely accessible mini museum and part of the Messner Mountain Heritage. Here, Reinhold Messner uses interstiing objects to tell stories about curious incidents in the mountains.
