Spring on two wheels: Tours, tips & talents
Can't wait to get back on your bike after the cold winter days? Then how about a biking holiday in South Tyrol? We have a few ideas for a successful start to the bike season in the sun-kissed South Tyrolean regions - for racing cyclists, mountain bikers and leisure cyclists.
At last it is getting warmer, at last it is getting greener, at last we can feel the sun on our skin and the wind in our hair. While in some parts of South Tyrol people are still skiing in March and April, in the Meran area, around Latsch in the Vinschgau valley and in the Southern South Tyrol you can already breathe in the spring air and instead of the 'bombardino' in the chalet you can drink an Aperol spritz on the sun terrace. We asked the bike experts at the BikeHotels Südtirol for their advice and tried out what spring cycling in South Tyrol has to offer.
3 tour suggestions for your spring holiday in South Tyrol
1. Southern South Tyrol: get into gear on a road bike
Maybe you're like us and your fitness level still has room for improvement after the winter break. That's why the first thing to do in spring is to start rolling in, and the Southern South Tyrol is the best place to do this. The BikeHotel Gasthof Terzer in Kurtatsch has been our favourite base camp for road bike holidays in the lowlands for years.
Lukas, the hotel manager, advises us to combine the South Tyrolean and Trentino wine routes. And he wouldn't be Lukas if he didn't spontaneously decide to join us. He has been riding his racing bike regularly throughout the winter and it shows: We're a little jealous of how powerfully he pedals all the way.
2. Vinschgau: Follow the sun
Road biking is great and fun, but we're even more passionate about mountain biking. And for that you MUST go to Latsch in spring. The trails there were completely overhauled in 2024 and are in really good shape. Nevertheless, there is still plenty of suspension travel required. We take the first shuttle ride up to the start of the Flipsi Trail on the sunny side of the Vinschgau Valley and look over to the shady Nörderberg - but it can still wait.
Because on this spring day, the Flipsi Trail is first on the programme, then the Tschilli Trail and finally a short detour to Martin and Hannes at the BikeHotel Jagdhof to chat about the latest bike trends with the two "Piris" at the hotel bar. We would love to stay here even longer, go to the sauna, splash around in the ski pool and enjoy a gourmet meal. But we'll save that for another time when we have more time to relax and don't have to be back at our desks in the office early the next day.
3. Meran and Environs: Good for gravel biking
You don't really need a new gravel bike for the many cycle paths between Naturns, Meran and Nals, but we simply couldn't resist an offer during Black Friday Week. And now the long-awaited first ride on our stylish gravel bike takes us along the cycle path from Naturns to Nals.
We listen to the advice of Thomas Schuler from the BikeHotel Schulerhof and don't start until around 10 a.m.: this way we can enjoy the spring sunshine from the start and cycle through the apple orchards in a relaxed and leisurely manner. On the cycle path, we meet cyclists from all over the world and on very different bikes - with and without E. No wonder: in spring and especially at apple blossom time, this route along white and pink blossoming apple trees is simply a dream.
