Castle adventures for kids and teens
Children love castles and palaces. No wonder: after all, fairy tales and legends have been telling tales of brave knights and noble damsels, beautiful princesses and handsome princes for centuries. Faithful steeds and mighty swords, gleaming armour and splendid robes - all of these inspire our imagination and awaken our thirst for adventure. And what would Sleeping Beauty be without a castle, or King Arthur without Camelot?
Cool teenagers are no longer so easy to inspire. But even they can't completely escape the fascination of castles. It is no coincidence that Hogwarts is no ordinary boarding school for Harry Potter and other budding wizards, but a magnificent castle complex. The mighty walls of castles and palaces are not only the setting for exciting stories: Secret passages and castle ghosts, hidden treasures and castle dungeons often play an important role in the plot. Would you like to experience that medieval feeling with your family? Today we present 3 castles and palaces in South Tyrol that are fun for children and parents alike.
Experience for young and old medieval fans
How did knights and squires live in the Middle Ages? How did they fight, and how did they celebrate? Knight Friedrich provides answers to these and many other questions during the family and children's tours of Prösels Castle near Völs am Schlern in July and August. Alternatively, you and your child can also discover Prösels Castle together with Witch Martha in August. For both types of guided tours, please register by email at info@schloss-proesels.it. The number of participants is limited. There is also an escape room at Prösels Castle with the exciting hunt for the dragon ruby.
With bow and arrow like Robin Hood
Hocheppan Castle towers above Eppan. The fantastic view and the cosy castle tavern make it a popular excursion destination for hikers. Those interested in art will love the castle chapel, which can be visited as part of a guided tour. A highlight for active families is the archery course: young and old archers from the age of 6 can prove their marksmanship with 28 3D animal figures. Particularly family-friendly: in addition to the long three-hour round, there is also a short round that takes around 1.5 hours. You can hire the equipment for a fee. No previous experience is required.
Atmospheric film backdrop
Mountains and castle create a magnificent picture: Taufers Castle watches over the village of Sand in Taufers and behind it, the Zillertal Alps with the mighty Schwarzenstein tower into the sky. So it comes as no surprise to us that many film people have chosen the castle as a film location. Have you and your children seen the films Schreckenstein Castle and Schreckenstein Castle 2 – Kissing (not) forbidden, based on the young adult book series of the same name by Oliver Hassencamp? Then a visit to Taufers Castle is sure to give you an aha moment or two: a large part of both films was shot at Taufers Castle.
Incidentally, the castle set of Roman Polanski's famous film Dance of the Vampires was also modelled on Taufers Castle. Taufers Castle can also be seen in scenes from many other films.
There are many other castles and fortresses worth visiting in South Tyrol – from Tyrol Castle to Welsperg Castle and Wolfsthurn Castle. Finally, a tip for all fans of jousting: In August 2024, the South Tyrolean Knights' Games will once again take place near Churburg Castle in Schluderns.
