TRAAM - the ski manufacturer at Kronplatz
Anyone looking for a very special pair of skis for the coming winter will find what they are looking for in the village of Reischach near Bruneck. Here, at the foot of Kronplatz, TRAAM skis are produced: they are handmade with passion and precision, perfectly tailored to different requirement profiles and individual design wishes.
The 2024/2025 ski season at Kronplatz has not yet opened, but it will start in around a month's time on 30 November. We were already on the Kronplatz in March with the skis and a trio of men from the ROC.TRAAM company, but we've saved this blog post until now to get you in the mood for the upcoming ski season in South Tyrol just in time for winter.
A dream becomes reality
In the beginning there was a shared dream, in the Pustertal dialect "Traam", of 4 friends with a pronounced passion for skiing: The quartet dreamed of customised skis in top quality and at a reasonable price. In 2014, the quartet launched the TRAAM project with a great deal of passion and enthusiasm and began building high-quality skis in a former garage near the Reischach cable car station.
The company is still based here, but in December 2022 the small start-up was raised to a more professional level with the founding of ROC.TRAAM GmbH: In addition to TRAAM Skibau + Skiklinik, the company currently also includes ROC (Rent on click) ski hire with a delivery service to accommodation and the ROC ski school.
The company team has changed over the years, but the company is still firmly in the hands of men. Andreas Recla, who won the Italian freeskiing championships on the moguls in his youth and later ran a ski school, was one of the founders right from the start and is in charge of ski construction at TRAAM.
On and off the slopes
On a winter's day, a sporty trio from ROC.TRAAM is waiting for us at half past eight in the morning at the valley station in Reischach: Andreas Recla, Giacomo Spinelli (marketing and communications professional at ROC.TRAAM GmbH) and Markus Baumgartner (ski instructor at the ROC Ski & Snowboard School) give us a warm welcome. They are well equipped with various TRAAM products, from skis and ski poles to ski goggles.
Together we take the cable car up to the summit plateau of Kronplatz at an altitude of 2,275 metres. A fantastic mountain panorama from the Dolomites to the main Alpine ridge and a large selection of ski slopes await us there. We film and photograph Andreas, Giacomo and Markus on and off the slopes, on the descent and during a short ascent. The 3 passionate skiers show us in a practical test that TRAAM offers excellent skis for different requirements and preferences.
Ski production with an innovative concept
But now we are curious to see how the skis from the Pustertal Valley are made. We float down to Reischach in the gondola. There, Giacomo and Markus say goodbye, while Andreas accompanies us the few steps from the valley station up to the company headquarters and the ski factory.
In the entrance area, where TRAAM-designed accessories such as ski goggles and T-shirts are on display alongside various ski models, Andreas tells us more about TRAAM's philosophy. The original idea of a completely customised ski was developed into a concept in which there are currently 8 ski models to choose from: 3 for piste skiing (Race | All Mountain), 2 for ski touring and 3 for freeride fun.
Layer by layer to your dream ski
There are several lengths and design suggestions for each TRAAM model, but individual customer wishes can also be realised in terms of both length and design. The best-selling models are the "Schlonka" for advanced piste skiers and the "Guat", which is suitable for both beginners and intermediate piste skiers. TRAAM only produces to order: on the TRAAM website you will find an overview of the 8 models with detailed profiles.
Whether "Gams", "Cruisa" or "96" - all TRAAM models are manufactured in sandwich construction: This construction method is so called because materials with different properties are joined together in layers. The skis are built from the bottom up. Several layers are glued together between the base and the surface and then "baked" with heat and pressure in the vacuum press for up to 6 hours.
The centrepiece of every TRAAM ski is the wood core, which comes from selected woods. Ash, beech and poplar from the Puster Valley are used for the wood cores.
TRAAM pays attention to high quality not only for the wood, but also for all other materials used, from glass fibre to adhesives.
TRAAM customers are spoilt for choice when it comes to the surface of the skis: even unusual customer wishes regarding the design can be realised on a plastic surface, while wooden surfaces - possibly combined with moss and hay - offer puristic naturalness.
Workshop and workshop
Ski production takes place in 2 rooms behind the entrance area. The first room of the workshop is dominated by 2 impressive machines: a vacuum press and a grinding machine. In the second room, Lukas Mayrl is on the workbench adjusting and fixing the steel edges of a touring ski to the base. He skilfully bends the edges into the right shape.
If you want to know more about the exact workflow involved in the production of skis "Made in South Tyrol", you can register for a workshop at TRAAM and make your own pair of skis over a weekend with professional support from the TRAAM crew. The workshops take place with 3 to 4 participants. Would you prefer to try out the feeling of skiing with a TRAAM ski first? Then hire a model from ROC ski hire.
