Hiking in Naturns
The contrast between the Mediterranean Sonnenberg and the green Nörderberg makes Naturns a unique hiking area. The scenic Meran High Alpine Route and the fun Alpine hike, a fascinating gorge and an idyllic forest: Naturns offers hiking experiences for the whole family at any time of year.
The village of Naturns is located 15 kilometres west of Meran, in the heart of the South Tyrolean Texel Group Nature Park and at the entrance to the Vinschgau Valley. The hiking trails here are as varied as the landscape: there are paths through apple orchards and irrigation ditches around Juval Castle, idyllic alpine hikes and challenging mountain tours. Today we present the two hiking paradises of Naturns, the Sonnenberg and Nörderberg, in a short portrait, with a hiking and event tip.
Hiking on the Sonnenberg in Naturns
The power of the sun characterises nature and life on the Sonnenberg in Naturns, a mountain slope north of Naturns: from the fertile valley floor to the steep slopes with the mountain farms, all the way to the Alpine peaks, you can explore the Sonnenberg along various hiking trails. The famous Meran High Alpine Route also runs along the Sonnenberg: this year, the hiking trail marked with the number 24 celebrates its 40th anniversary with special events.
Meran High Alpine Route & Gorge of 1.000 Steps
The Meran High Alpine Route is the perfect way to discover the scenic beauty of the Texel Group Nature Park. Five to seven days are required to walk the entire 90 km circular route. Perhaps you would like to try hiking just a section of it to start, for example, with the hike through the Gorge of 1.000 steps, you will spend most of your time on the Meran High Alpine Route, which will test you with 987 steps and a spectacular suspension bridge.
Unterstell cable car and Sonnenberg viewing platform
Would you like to quickly and comfortably ascend the Sonnenberg and get closer to the Meran High Alpine Route? No problem: the Unterstell cable car takes you from 550 to 1,300 metres above sea level in just a few minutes.
Just a 10-minute walk from the mountain station of the Unterstell cable car is a viewing platform with a wow effect. If you are not afraid of heights, you absolutely must venture onto this 29-metre steel structure: an adrenaline rush and a magnificent panorama from the Meran basin to the giants of the Ortler group await you.
Springtime in Naturns
The particularly early start to the hiking season on the sunny Naturns mountain is celebrated on 30 March 2025: Alpine Spring in Naturns. On this spring Sunday, you can use the Unterstell cable car and experience life on the mountain farms. On the occasion of this event, you can also enjoy culinary specialities in the mountain huts of the Sonnenberg, which will serve you typical dishes from the region.
Hiking on the green Nörderberg in Naturns
The densely wooded Nörderberg perfectly complements the Sonnenberg hiking offer on the opposite side: on Nörderberg you will find refreshing oases of relaxation even in the height of summer - from fairytale forests to lush alpine meadows with grazing animals and picturesque mountain lakes. If you like intimacy and unspoilt nature, Nörderberg the right place for you.
Nörderberg Alpine Hike
Particularly recommended is the Nörderberg Alpine Hike. This circular hike starts at the Kreuzbrünnl car park and leads from the Naturns Alm (1,910 m) via the Zetn Alm (1,747 m) to the Mausloch Alm (1,835 m) and from there back to the Kreuzbrünnl. From the Naturnsalm to the Mauslochalm, you walk along the idyllic alpine pasture path.
In the summer months, it is possible to refresh oneself with traditional South Tyrolean specialities at mountain huts along the way. From May, a minibus shuttle runs to the Kreuzbrünnl car park, the ideal starting point for hikes up the Nörderberg: you can use the shuttle for the outward journey and also for the journey to the village centre of Naturns.
Naturns mountain huts unplugged
On Sunday 15 June 2025 you will have the opportunity to experience Alpine hospitality and South Tyrolean joie de vivre at its best! Nörderberg kicks off the alpine season with the event Naturns mountain huts unplugged. In addition to breathtaking views and beautiful hiking trails, lively live music with folk interpretations and local specialities from savoury to sweet await you on this summer day.
