Short description

Cycle to the high alpine Stausee in the Zillertal Alps.

Description

If you have enough stamina and endurance, you can see a marvellous lake, eternal ice and rustic mountain valleys on this strenuous tour.

Starting point of the tour

Kematen in Taufers

Destination of the tour

Kematen in Taufers

Route description

The tour begins in the wide Tauferer valley basin, in the centre of the small village of Kematen. One kilometre to the north, the state road branches off into the Mühlwald valley. After a moderate ascent, you reach the main village of Mühlwald after a good 7 kilometres. Consequently, the route becomes somewhat steeper, especially from the entrance to the idyllic mountain village of Lappach. Here, numerous hairpin bends and steep climbs demand an enormous effort.
The reward is a leisurely cycle along the banks of the Neves Stausees (1,860 m), which lies at the foot of the mountain giants Hoher Weißzint, Großer Möseler and Turnerkamp. At the northern end of the lake, we follow the forest road up to the Chemnitzer Hütte (2,445 m). On the following descent to the Göge-Alm (1,850 m) in the Weißenbach valley, the bike has to be carried. From Weißenbach, the route continues along a tarmac road to Luttach and on to Sand in Taufers or Kematen.
