Reschen Pass
A picture from the region around the Reschen Pass between Tyrol and South Tyrol is probably known the world over: the church tower in Lake Reschen. Due to the construction of a reservoir, Alt-Reschen and Alt-Graun were almost completely flooded in 1950. Only the church tower of Graun, today the landmark of the Reschen Pass holiday region, is a silent reminder of this and serves as a popular postcard motif.
Holiday destination in the Vinschgau Valley
The Reschen Pass holiday region is located in the border triangle between Italy, Austria and Switzerland and is named after the pass of the same name, which also marks the border with Austria and the village of Nauders. The holiday region is located at over 1,400 metres above sea level and includes the villages of Graun, Reschen and St. Valentin auf der Haide as well as the side valleys of Langtaufers and Rojen.
There are also two lakes in the area – the natural Lake Haider in St. Valentin and the artificial Lake Reschen in Graun in Vinschgau. Whether you are passing through or spending your holiday on the Reschen Pass, the two lakes are worth a visit at any time of year!
Between Tyrol & South Tyrol
What is far less well known: The Etsch, the main river of the Vinschgau Valley and the second longest river in Italy, has its source in Reschen. Its source is very close near the village.
It is also not widely known that it has been a strategically important point for almost eternity. Long before the Reschen Pass made a name for itself as a pretty holiday resort, Roman legions passed through here via Meran on the Via Claudia Augusta. In the Middle Ages, traders travelled south and the area around the Reschen Pass was also important during the First World War.
Thanks to the picturesque landscape around Lake Haider and Lake Reschen, the wide range of activities on offer with hikes and MTB tours and the snow-sure ski areas of Schöneben and Haideralm, the holiday region on the Reschen is always bustling with activity.
Sights on the Reschen Pass
Nature and culture. Landscape and sightseeing. Sport and pleasure. In the Upper Vinschgau, neither one nor the other is neglected. Many of the attractions in Reschen were created more or less without human intervention: The source of the Etsch River, which is just a few minutes away from the village centre, and the scenically unique high valley of Rojen are definitely worth a detour. Rojen is also home to the highest settlement in Tyrol - at 2,000 metres - as well as the beautiful church of St. Nicholas with frescoes from the Meran School.
Some of the sights in Reschen and the surrounding area were also created by man. These include, for example
- the Museum Vinschger Oberland - Alt Graun, which tells the story of the village up until the damming of the lake in 1950,
- the famous church tower in Lake Reschen,
- the pretty little church of St Anne in Graun,
- the parish church of St Valentin in the village of the same name and
- a large number of remains from the First World War with a huge underground bunker complex, some of which is now open to visitors.
