Mt. Fennberg
Although the fixed-rope route is rather short, a via ferrata kit is absolutely necessary for kids and beginners. Spring and autumn are ideal for this tour, whereas it can be very in summer.
The tour to Mt. Fennberg can be started either in Aichholz (251 m) or in Margreid (243 m) at the South Tyrolean Wine Route in Southern South Tyrol. Arrival: if you come by the motorway, take the exit Neumarkt/Auer. Parking is possible about 3 km south of Margreid.
Tour description (Arc Alpin):
The first secton goes through a short, steep forest until the first chimney. The tour continues via ladders and ropes until the middle, forested part. Under a large, yellow overhang that you can see very well from below, you go to the right along ropes and will reach a road junction. From here, go to the hamlet Putzwald-Fennberg (1,090 m) or to the left along Büchl-Fennberg (1,090 m) to Gasthof Plattenhof in Unterfennberg (1,034 m).
For the descent, there are two possibilities either from Putzwald on a broad marked trail (no. 3) to Margreid and there back along the road or via Unterfennberg, first on the road, then on the left on path no. 502 B across Höllental back to Aichholz and to the starting point. This option is longer but more interesting.
Details of the tour:
- Length: Ascent about 3 h – Descent via Margreid 2.5-3 h, via Aichholz 3 h
- Difference in altitude: about 900 m
- Level of difficulty: easy
