Gantkofel
The hiking trail to the Mendelkamm and the Gantkofel, known for its impressive vertical rock face behind Andrian and the fantastic panorama, is sometimes pleasant, sometimes steep.
The Gantkofel, also known as Monte Macaion, is 1,866 metres high and is one of the most popular excursion destinations in southern South Tyrol throughout the year. The peak is part of the well-known Mendel Mountains, which extend in a gentle curve from the Gampen Pass, south of Meran, to the Roen, above the wine-growing village of Tramin.
In summer, numerous hiking trails and paths cross the beautiful natural landscape, while in winter, a small paradise opens up for winter and snowshoe hikers. However, the Gantkofel is not only known to recreational sports enthusiasts, but also to lovers of local history and culture.
Traditionally, fires visible from afar are lit here (as well as on numerous other mountains throughout the country) on Sacred Heart Sunday in June to commemorate the Tyrolean fight for freedom. These Sacred Heart fires then light up the entire ridge of the Mendel. A fiery red eagle, the heraldic animal of Tyrol, can usually be seen on the rocks directly above Andrian.
Weather radar on the Gantkofel
In addition, the summit of the Gantkofel has been known for several years as the location of a special weather radar of the regional weather service, which can be easily spotted among the larch trees. The digital device can track precipitation and thunderstorms in real time, in high resolution and beyond the region's borders. In the event of severe storms, any necessary warnings can be issued and emergency services notified.
