“Waalwege” – hiking around Meran
Especially in spring time you can make wonderful hiking tours along these irrigation channels. In German, they are called “Waale” and the paths that flank them are the so called “Waalwege”. These paths were indispensable for the maintenance of the channels.
In Meran and environs there are more than fifty of these special hiking and walking pats. Not to forget about the culinary aspect, because along these ways you will find many nice inns and restaurants offering typical dishes of the region and seasonal specialities.
“Waalwege” paths in Marling & Algund
The paths along old irrigation channels in Marling and Algund are, for instance, some of the most beautiful tours in the surroundings of Meran. The “Waalweg” in Marling is about 12 km long and goes from Töll, Marling and Tscherms to Oberlana. It maybe is the most panoramic path of this kind in the region, offering a fantastiv view of Meran and of Burggrafenamt.
The “Waalweg” in Algund is almost 6 km long starting in Töll too. Through vineyards and forests, it goes to Gratsch above Algund.

Other recommended „Waalwege“ paths are waiting in the surrounding area of Dorf Tirol. Walking on shady trails along the old irrigation channels, you will see canyons, romantic gorges, lakes and steep rock walls until the impressive landscape of Texel Group Nature Park.
