Short description

If you love the varied Dolomite landscape with its rugged rock faces, lovely alpine meadows and sparkling blue waters, then this hike is a must. After all, it is no exaggeration to say that it leads to one of the most beautiful lakes that the "Pale Mountains" have to offer.

Description

To be precise, Lake Sorapiss is no longer located in South Tyrol, but between Misurina and Cortina d'Ampezzo in the neighbouring province of Belluno. The reason why the tour is still mentioned here is firstly because the starting point can be reached from Toblach in a reasonable time. Secondly, the unique, pastel-coloured, turquoise lake is a must-see.

Starting point of the tour

Passo Tre Croci

Destination of the tour

Lake Sorapiss

Route description

The start is at Passo Tre Croci or, coming from Misurina, a few metres before the mountain pass. At the pass itself, only the Vandelli hut next to the lake is signposted - at a barrier where a wider footpath branches off the road, the hiking sign also points to Lake Sorapiss. If you follow the number 215, you are definitely on the right track. At first, the path descends slightly until you reach a forest that is sometimes denser, sometimes lighter. After a while, the trees disappear and the path turns into a stony, sometimes slightly ascending and narrow path. However, the walk always remains extremely varied, as new views, different sections of the path and other surprises await around almost every bend.

Below the rock faces that tower into the sky on the right, the path is also somewhat exposed in places and is equipped with holding ropes, iron steps and a small wooden crossing. Once you have completed this section, the route continues relatively comfortably, almost level and somewhat shadier, until the blue shutters of the Vandelli hut peek out between the trees and rocks.

Now it's just a few steps to the turquoise-blue lake, which offers a truly overwhelming view. If you like, you can walk around the fascinating body of water and find a cosy spot to rest and picnic on the shallow shore on the opposite side.

Return along the same route.

Directions

Drive into Hochpustertal Valley as far as Toblach, then turn south and take the SS51 to Schluderbach; continue left to Misurina, then towards Cortina d'Ampezzo as far as the mountain pass Passo Tre Croci, which is about 8 kilometres before Cortina.

Parking

There are several car parks directly at Passo Tre Croci. As the crowds are usually quite large in high summer, many people also park on the roadside around the pass.

On hot summer days, be sure to pack your swimming trunks and bikini in your rucksack. Lake Sorapiss is not only beautiful to look at, but also invites you to jump in!
