Wine-growing region South Tyrol
There is hardly another region in Europe that is that much characterised by attractive contrasts. A colourful and varied scenery opens up in the southern side of the Alps, in Italy’s northernmost province. Two thirds of the regional territory are located at 1,500 m of altitude and beyond. About 40 % are covered with forests. Only about 9 % are located below 800 m – and this is where South Tyrol’s best grapes are growing on 4,900 hectares.
South Tyrolean wine
Countless generations of winegrowers have formed and shaped the traditional wine-growing region South Tyrol. Here, findings of grape seeds have been witnessing the “home right” of vines already from the Iron Age. In the attractive South Tyrolean landscape, grapes were offered ideal conditions thousands of years ago already.
In the north, the Alps form a protective wall against cold winds, whereas the Mediterranean influences have an impact from the south. The 1,800 hours of sun on average guarantee average temperatures of about 18 °C making the grape feeling particularly comfortable. A good distribution of precipitation quantity as well as loose, will-ventilated and easily warmed soils – predominantly consisting of chalk and sediments of glacial moraines and rivers – contribute to the high quality of grapes.
