Jaufenburg Castle in St. Leonhard in Passeier
The function of this medieval castle dating back to the 13th century was the observation of the path leading over Jaufen pass. The keep is the only part of the old complex that has been preserved. All other annexes have expired during the centuries.
The keep of Jaufenburg Castle has been lovingly refurbished and is a branch of MuseumPasseier. In addition to the castle’s history, visitors can learn more about the typical “Schildhöfe” farms in Passeiertal Valley, about the most important families and see wonderful Renaissance paintings. From the top floor of five floors, you can enjoy a wonderful view over Passeiertal Valley to Meran and hear interesting legends about Jaufenburg Castle at the listing stations.

Worth-seeing as well is the small, late Gothic Hl. Kreuz church a bit below the castle. A visit of Jaufenburg Castle can perfectly be combined with an easy hike on the “Sun walk”, a circular tour starting in the centre of St. Leonhard.
Visitors can reach Jaufenburg Castle within about 20-30 minutes on foot from St. Leonhard in Passeier on a quite steep path. A narrow road for cars branching of Jaufen pass road is available too. Normally, the castle is open for single visitors and groups each summer. Guided tours are offered for an additional charge.
As well, culture lovers will look forward to the yearly “Summer of Culture” at Jaufenburg Castle, a series of cabaret and music evenings.
