Sarntal is one of the longest valleys in South Tyrol, starting north of Bozen and stretching about 50 km northward to the mountain pass Penser Joch and the city of Sterzing. The largest municipality of South Tyrol in terms of surface has 28 districts and about 7,000 inhabitants.
In addition to the principal town Sarnthein, located at 961 m above sea level, the municipality of Sarntal has several other hamlets, such as Astfeld, Reinswald, Durnholz, Rabenstein, Weißenbach, Pens at Penser Joch Pass and many more.
