Jannik Sinner - tennis star from South Tyrol
A portrait of the exceptional athlete from Sexten.
Jannik Sinner is currently on everyone’s lips among sports enthusiasts in South Tyrol. The young man from Sexten, born in 2001, played tennis for the first time at the age of 3. In his childhood, however, Sinner initially tried his hand at skiing. Soon, however, he concentrated on playing tennis, and at a professional level.
From 2015 onwards, he took part in several junior tournaments and then ITF tournaments and ATP Challenger Tours. This was followed by his first Challenger Tour title in Bergamo in 2019. His place in the world rankings also improved steadily as a result of these successes. In the same year, he also took part in the ATP Tour for the first time and in autumn came the first NextGen victory in Milan.
Game, set and match!
Since 2020, Sinner established himself more and more on the ATP Tour and was, for example, one of the youngest ATP winners in history. He also celebrated his first Grand Slam victory that year. Things continued to become better and better in 2021, with four tournament victories, the first Masters final and a rise into the top 10 of the world rankings. In 2022, he reached the quarterfinals in three Slams, reaches his 6th ATP title but due to a hand injury ends the year at 15th in the world rankings.
In 2023, he reached the finals in Miami and the final of the ATP Finals in Turin, the semifinals in Wimbledon, and won in Montpellier, Toronto, Beijing and Vienna, reaching 4th in the world rankings! He also won the 2023 Davis Cup with the Italian team.
And Jannik Sinner got off to a fantastic start in 2024: he won the Australian Open in Melbourne to claim his first Grand Slam title. His victory in Miami made him the number 2 tennis player in the world. This excites all Sinner fans, and especially the Carota Boys: the six young men from Revello in Piemont cause a stir at tennis tournaments and public viewings with their carrot costumes.
On 10 June 2024, with his participation in Roland Garros in Paris, Jannik Sinner, at only 22 years of age, reached the top of the Apt world rankings, becoming the first Italian in history to reach this position!
