Railway expansion in South Tyrol: current restrictions & closures

Due to important modernization work along the railway lines in Pustertal and Vinschgau, train journeys are currently not possible without restrictions. However, the measures are necessary to guarantee the safety and efficiency of rail transport, and to make travelling by train even more pleasant in the future. Here is all information on the closure of the Pustertal railway and the Vinschgau railway.

Train connections in South Tyrol are constantly modernized and improved to make train travel even more enjoyable.

Expansion of the Pustertal railway: closures until January 2026

In order to carry out important work and construct the so-called Riggertal route, the train connection in Pustertal Valley will be closed in sections between Franzensfeste and Innichen from December 2024 to January 2026. During this time, a rail replacement service with buses will be set up. 

Affected route I: Franzensfeste – Bruneck 

  • Period: 15 December 2024 to 13 December 2025
  • Replacement service: Buses (B400) between Brixen and Bruneck every 30 minutes (during the day) and regional line (401)
  • Transfer from the train to the replacement service only at Brixen station

Affected route II: Bruneck – Innichen

  • Period: 14 April to 2 June 2025
  • Replacement service: Buses (B500) between Bruneck and Innichen every 30 minutes

Affected route III: Franzensfeste – Mühlbach

  • Period: 14 Dezember 2025 to 26 January 2026
  • Replacement service: to be announced

Vinschgau railway update: sectional closures until March 2026

Due to modernization work along the entire railway line, there will be sectional closures of train services between Mals and Meran from Ferbuary 2025 to March 2026. A comprehensive rail replacement service with buses will be available during this time.

Affected route I: Mals – Laas

  • Period: 16 February to 25 October 2025
  • Replacement service: Buses (B250) between Mals and Laas every 30 minutes, adapted timetable for bus routes 271 and 272
  • On the remaining route between Meran and Laas, the Vinschgau railway will operate with a modified timetable during this time. 
  • In addition, there will be a closure in the evening hours, with trains cancelled on the entire route (Meran-Mals). There will also be a replacement bus service here. 

Affected route II: Meran – Mals

  • Period: 26 October 2025 probably until the end of March 2026
  • Replacement service: to be announced

TIP: The train ticket is always valid for the rail replacement service. The replacement buses can also be used free of charge with the Südtirol Guest Pass, which you can obtain from many participating accommodation structures. 

Please note: Bicycles cannot be taken on the replacement service buses!

Frequently asked questions

When will the Pustertal Valley railway be closed?
From 15 December 2024 to 26 January 2026, sections of the railway line in Pustertal will be closed between Franzensfeste and Innichen. 

When will the Vinschgau Valley railway run again?
The Vinschgau railway is expected to be back in operation at the end of March 2026 once the work has been completed. 

Is there a rail replacement service?
Where train services are not possible, there will be a rail replacement service with buses for the entire duration of the construction work. These buses will stop at the railway station or at the central bus stop in the villages along the route, both in Pustertal and Vinschgau. 

Are there alternatives?
In addition to the buses of the rail replacement service, there are regional buses in Pustertal and Vinschgau. These buses run the same/similar routes, but sometimes serve additional stops, which means the yourney takes a little longer.
