Lamb Weeks of “Villnösser Brillenschaf”
Our editorial team always tries to provide detailed and accurate information, but it is possible that events undergo changes that we are unable to update in real time. Exact details on dates, times and programmes can be obtained directly from the organiser. Also this year in autumn, the Villnöss valley hosts the Lamb Weeks of the typical sheep from Villnöss, which is also called “sheep with glasses” (German: “Brillenschaf”). Numerous restaurants in the valley as well as several partner companies of “Villnösser Brillenschaf” will spoil you with tasty dishes based on the meat of these local sheep for a few days.
The sheep of Villnöss is the oldest breed of sheep in South Tyrol and dates back to a cross-breeding in the 18th century. The characteristic black colour around ears and eyes gives it its name. Fallen into oblivion for a long time, the sheep has achieved new importance nowadays. This is not only due to the perfect adaptability of these animals, but also due to the quality of their fibred meat.
Special events at the Lamb Weeks
In addition, some special events are organized during the Lamb Weeks. First, you can participate in adventurous “lamb hikes” and discover the habits of mountain farming and agricultural products in Villnöss. Second, families will look forward to a felting afternoon at the visitor centre of Puez Geisler Nature Park. Here you can learn to process real wool of Villnöss sheep.
