Saint Nicholas, the holy bishop who brings sweets to all nice children, in South Tyrol comes along with hairy creatures: the krampus. The krampus are half man and half animal, with a pelt of a sheep or a goat, a hand-carved mask and big heavy bells.
Each year at the beginning of December, these krampus come to the earth and look for rude children, so the tradition. Nowadays, the krampus don’t try to catch nasty children any more, but to preserve the tradition and to show themselves in public.
The biggest meeting of krampus takes place in Toblach, in the Pustertal valley. On 7th December 2024, about 600 krampus from South Tyrol, Austria, Germany and Switzerland meet and walk around the village. On the main square, each group will present their masks and their clothes during a little show.
