Planetarium South Tyrol in Gummer
Lovers of space, planets and the mysteries of infinity, can satisfy some of their desire to learn more about all this, thanks to the Planetarium South Tyrol, a structure that is located in the centre of the village of Gummer in Eggental Valley and offering the chance to admire the infinite universe.
The planetarium in Gummer is the only one of its kind in South Tyrol. Since the summer of 2013, it has been showing visitors to the star village of Gummer, in addition to the Max Valier Observatory, impressive images from outer space. In contrast to the observatory, the images here are artificially displayed in 3D with the help of optical precision instruments. A sophisticated sound system underpins the powerful images and enhances their effect.
Visitors take their seats in comfortable armchairs and can set off on an exciting journey through the universe, just like in a spaceship. The beautiful images in unique quality take you around the earth and to distant planets. The planetarium offers shows, guided walks and programmes for school classes, families and adults. The workshops are particularly exciting.
The 1st European Star Village
The villages of Steinegg and Gummer, which belong to the municipality of Karneid, have devoted themselves entirely to the stars and planets. Not only in the planetarium in Gummer and in the only observatory in South Tyrol in Obergummer can you track down the secrets of the universe, but also on theme trails and at events. In Steinegg there is, among other things, a rocket tree house and specialised accommodation with telescopes for stargazing.
Trail of the planets
Those who love nature and hiking, walking can discover the universe, through the so-called “Trail of the Planets”, a path through the woods of Eggental Valley representing the solar system scale 1:1 million. The Astronomical Observatory Max Valier is the Sun and the beginning of the path, along the way you will meet the information panels that will provide information on the corresponding planet. The trail of 8 km is also suitable for families. You should plan about 2-3 hours for the leisurely hike with a wonderful panoramic view over Eggental.
